Rennsport closed beta

I finally got the beta key to Rennsport's closed beta! What does Rennsport have to offer in the world of sim racing? Can it really compete with the likes of ACC? Let's find out what's good and what needs some work! 

I'm actually really excited about this one. ACC isn't a new game by any means. The only other games out there on a similar level are Project Cars 2 or iRacing. So for Rennsport to come along and join the club is a very daring step. Not only because the GT3 series is a fan favorite, but because they're stepping into a world where they will have to compete with ACC. And let's not forget that ACC is an official partner of the GT World Challenge ... 

First impressions of Rennsport

The graphics are nice. That's an easy thing to spot. For a game that's still in beta that isn't the most important feature, but it's fair to say we expect it to be on par with other 2024 games. And, just like most different games, the overall tracks feel slightly different than what I'm used to. Track surfaces are generally similar, with bumps or cracks being where they're supposed to be. 

Tracks liks Spa are also more recent than in other games. That's to be expected of course. 

Driving

Overall the cars feel incredibily well balanced. I'm still wrapping my head around the amount of rear grip the cars have. In some ways it feels overly forgiving. I'm used to more aggressive snap oversteer or uncontrollable lock-ups. However, during the first hour or so into playing, I hardly ever ran wide and I never even spinned. That's great, but given the fact that in ACC both are fairly easy to do, it makes me wonder which of the two got it right. 

By no means is that a bad thing, though. I means you can start working on other areas of the car. They turn well, so utilizing that potential and getting a better drive out of corners becomes more important. Braking stability is great on all cars, allowing you to push your boundries and find that fine line between ABS and the fastest way into a turn. 

ACC is great at detailing tracks. So, it's a testament to Rennsport to match them closely on this, if not out do them slightly. Either way, you can jump straight in and feel right at home at tracks like Spa, the Nurburgring and Monza. It took me under 15 minutes to get within two seconds of my personal best times on ACC. The Hockenheimring is back too. A personal favorite of mine. It's just like I remember it from Project Cars 2, albeit maybe slightly narrower.  

Conclusion

I'm impressed! I'm not going to lie about that. Do they still have a long way to go? I think so. For me personally, I will be able to judge the game better once they have VR. Arguably that was the biggest adjustment for me; switching from a VR perspective to a 2D one. Everything just looks and feels a little bit less engaging when you do. Lukcy for me, Rennsport is developed on Unreal Engine 5 and will have VR support at a later stage.
